Darth Vader, born Anakin Skywalker, is the overall protagonist of the first six Star Wars films. The character was ranked as the third-greatest villain of all time on the American Film Institute's "100 Heroes & Villains" list, in 2003, [1] and as the greatest supervillain on Bravo's Adam West-narrated three-part series Ultimate Super Heroes, Vixens and Villains, in 2005. [2] Futurama has referenced it at least three times.
References to Darth Vader in Futurama
- In "A Clone of My Own", a piece of music evocative of Darth Vader plays as Captain Musky — a parody of Star Trek's Christopher Pike — approaches the podium (which is interesting, as both Vader and Pike use black life-support machines).
- The robots that chase the crew and Cubert in the Near-Death Star — a parody of the Death Star, from Star Wars — are reminiscent of Vader. (They later re-appear in "Near-Death Wish".)
- In Bender's Game, Vader's duel with Luke Skywalker in the 1980 film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is parodied, with Ignus playing the role of Vader and Greyfarn playing the role of Luke.
- In "Lethal Inspection", one of the Sith Overlords immitates Vader's mechanical breathing.
- In "Stench and Stenchibility", Bender says that, "together, [he and Tonya] shall rule the galaxy" — likely a reference to Vader's line "join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son", from The Empire Strikes Back.
